Austin City Limits 2008

Okay so here it is. The entire weekend breakdown. Now we rest......till the Presets and Cut Copy show tonight!

Day 1 kicked off in true ACL fashion.... It was hot and dusty. But that didn't stop the crowds or us to get in full festival mode. Sure we started a bit late due to some late night pre-parties. We still managed to make it down for our first highlighted show of the day. Here is the breakdown of Day 1.

Day One

Yeasayer

Yeasayer - We have knocked out 5 or 6 Yeasayer shows in 2008 so the excitement level wasn't as high as it should have been. Not that they don't deserve it, I mean come on we wouldn't keep seeing them if they weren't so damn good! The band was in full form and they pulled off another solid set. Looking back it was the ideal way to kick off the weekend.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend - The great big hype. I am converted. The band impressed me so much at SXSW that I have been preaching about them ever since. Yeah maybe they don't deserve THAT much attention but you can't deny that they write great tracks. They didn't even have a big enough catalog to play the entire hour. And that was with two new tracks. But who needs quantity when every song is a hit....

Jamie Lidell

Jamie Lidell - Lidell was in true form and has finally perfected the chemistry with his entire band. Decent sized crowd but I still think people are missing out on this guy. Such a perfect blend of funk, soul and pretty much everything else you can think of. Check out this video of the final 5 minutes of the set to get an idea.

Jamie Lidell - Live at ACL 2008

Gogol Bordello

Gogol Bordello - You cannot measure that amount of energy. This band is special and words really can't describe what a great experience a Gogol show is. No complaints except for they probably could have had a higher slot. Imagine if they had switched with N.E.R.D?

Hot Chip

Hot Chip -
What else can I say? I have been hooked since day 1 and these guys continue to amaze. They took a sluggish midday crowd and really turned things into a really good party. They have a guy on bass synthesizer and that says it all. We managed to capture them performing "Shake A Fist" and have the video for that below. Check out the drum "circle" at the beginning. Brilliant.

Hot Chip - Live at ACL 2008

Jenny Lewis

Jenny Lewis - I couldn't help but notice she was playing the WaMu stage.. Does that mean it was now the Chase Stage? Either way she was amazing. The new tracks off "Acid Tongue" are amazing and she even teared up during the performance of the title track. Bandmate and boyfriend Johnathan Rice even offered up a cover of "Love Hurts" towards that end. An unexpected highlight!

Pharrell

N.E.R.D - All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom..... And so it goes. We have had our share of Pharrell and Co. this year. From SXSW to Glow In The Dark. They provide a good time and use their performances to hook up and seriously who can blame them? It was a good time and fun to check out while trying to find a good spot for The Mars Volta.

Cedric Bixler-Zavala

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta - It's hard not to biased. They are my absolute favorite band. Tonight was my 9th time seeing them and the one thing I can say is that as a fan I can understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. But tonight was an exception. They were in true form and probably played one of the tightest sets I have ever seen them perform. The energy was right and they even went crazy and performed a whopping 4(ish) songs! I took a video of the video screen and really liked the way it came out. Check it out.

The Mars Volta - Live at ACL 2008

After Parties - Yes, Hot Chip was playing a house party tonight. For those that missed out I can say that it was kinda cool but don't believe the hype. While at the party we did manage to catch members of Hot Chip, Man Man and Trail of Dead enjoying the festivities. We also managed to make it down to the 508 House for the Antics party. I have to admit I was awestruck when DangerMouse and Cee-Lo of Gnarls Barkley came in. CSS played DJ and spun records from Coolio and Vanilla Ice. The best part though had to be the free vodka!

Day Two

Day 2 kicked off with mellow sets from Mugison and Jose Gonzalez and then picked up steam with the lovely Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings.

CSS

CSS - As energetic and fun as usual. They were kind of stuck playing a little bit too early so the heat kind of put a damper on the energy. But you always get what you paid for with their shows. A good time.

Erykah Badu - She started late and was a little too preachy but you can't argue that she has a beautiful voice. Most of the talking really ate up the time she had to perform some of her most famous songs but what we did get was worth it.

MGMT

MGMT - Same as Lolla they played a bit too early. But I have to say that they played to one of the biggest crowds I saw on a smaller stage this weekend. There were a ton of people! Its always interesting to see a band you knew about early on get big like that. There were some sound issues but they still managed to play a great set.

John Fogerty - One of the highlights. It was just nice to see somebody playing such an arsenal of classics with an enormous amount of energy and enthusiasm. My only regret was that I wasn't closer to the stage. I was surprised that I knew as many songs as I did.

The Black Keys

The Black Keys - Only caught a few songs because I didn't want to spoil the Sunday night after show. But I managed to stick around long enough to see one of my favorite bands play a really strong set. I also managed to capture some video of them performing "Psychotic Girl".

Beck

Beck

Beck - The sound on the AT&T stage was absolutely horrible. It was so off that you could hear conversations a lot more than you could hear the music. Beck is never bad in concert and has always tried to do new things and this was just kind of more of the same. Not to mention that he finished a little over 10 minutes early! I enjoyed to better parts of the show but as we were walking out a fellow festival goer put it best... "Best worst concert ever".

Beck - Loser

Day Three

Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups -
Walked in just in time to catch the entire set. The crowd was especially mellow which is usually how it goes on the third day when everyone is exhausted. From what I could tell the new songs sound great and it's always fun to hear my favorite track from the last album.

Okkervil River

Okkervil River - Finally got to see this band. Even though they are from Austin I have never had a chance to see them. The new album is fantastic and they played heavily from it. They commented on how good it was to be home even though it was only for one day.

Jack White

Raconteurs

The Raconteurs - Jack White mentioned on several occasions during the set that he was sick and that had a disc in his back out of place. Although he looked at times like he wasn't doing to well that didn't effect his guitar playing. Proving once again that Jack White at 50% is still better than most. As always I have to give credit to Brendan Benson who really is the band secret weapon.

Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara -
I had mostly seen them in passing during other festivals so I really made it a point to stick around for this set. "Back In Your Head" is one of my favorite songs right now and I really wanted to hear it. They were fantastic and I really kick myself now for not catching their show at Stubb's a few weeks ago.

The Black Keys

Aftershow / The Black Keys at Stubb's - Took some time to get out of the park and make my way to Stubb's so I unfortunately missed The Black Angels. Matter of fact I walked in just as the Keys started. They played an explosive set and really relied heavily on material from their latest album Attack and Release. Both CeeLo and DangerMouse of Gnarls Barkley were on hand and bobbing their heads during the entire show (pic below).

Gnarls Barkley

I don't what else to say other than they are my favorite band right now. Below is video of them performing Strange Times.

Now on to Fun Fun Fun Fest.....

ACL Spotlight: Gogol Bordello

Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999. They are renowned for their frenetic, theatrical stage shows. Much of their sound is inspired by Gypsy music, as most of their members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle (and on some of their albums, saxophone) mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub.

They have become a must see for festival goers over the last few years and most blogger and magazines have said that the bands performances at these festivals were among the best. Get there early because its going to be packed.

ACL Spotlight: The Black Keys

The Black Keys are the highlight of this weekend for me. The bands latest Attack & Release is easily one of my favorite albums of the year and they are the only band I am going to see twice this weekend.

The Black Keys-I Got Mine [mp3]

The Akron, Ohio-based duo The Black Keys is well known for its concentrated, hermetic approach to recording, hunkering down with rudimentary equipment in an unfinished basement or commandeering the floor of a vacant local rubber factory to create terse but soulful rock that seems to have time-traveled into the pair's amps from some long-ago radio show. But guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney now admit they were ready for a change of scene-as well as some company. So when they got the opportunity to work with Grammy Award-nominated producer-musician-provocateur Danger Mouse, a/k/a Brian Burton (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Grey Album), they agreed, for the first time, to leave their familiar environs. They weren't quite willing to cross state lines yet, though.

The Black Keys had originally been approached by Danger Mouse to write songs for an album he was developing with Grammy Award-winning R&B legend Ike Turner, who, in recent years, had been recognized more for his contribution to the birth of rock & roll than for the time he'd spent in the tabloids. That project would never be completed, however, and the 76 year-old Turner passed away unexpectedly in December.

With Danger Mouse, The Black Keys didn't veer uncomfortably far from the elemental rock & roll territory they'd mined so effectively on previous albums like their 2006 Nonesuch debut, Magic Potion, or their Fat Possum discs, Rubber Factory (2004) and Thickfreakness (2003). But they were definitely in a mood to experiment on Attack and Release. Dan explains, "We'd never let it all go before like we did for this one, where anything was game." The new tracks have a spaciousness and clarity that accentuate the soulfulness in Dan's preternaturally weathered vocals and in arrangements that oscillate between melancholy and swagger.

ACL Spotlight: The Black and White Years

The Black and White Years are a local band that has an electric/rock sound. The guys formed the band in 2006 in Nashville, TN and moved to Austin to fulfill their dreams in the greatest music city in the nation. They have graduated from playing Beauty Bar, to packing them in at Stubb's inside, to now performing at one of the biggest festivals in the nation.

Discovered by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads during a SXSW show (another reason Austin is great by the way) at Opal Divine's. Supposedly there were 15 people there that day, but it shows you how you can never tell who might be watching you. Mr. Harrison liked what he saw and decided to produce their debut album.

You can also check them out on RCRDLBL.

ACL Spotlight: Band of Horses

Band of Horses formed in Seattle in 2004 and in those few years they have already amassed a bunch of fans. Their catalog includes two albums, with the most recent being Cease To Begin, which was released last October via Sub Pop.

Asked about Cease To Begin, lead singer Ben Bridwell said this in an interview with Pitchfork: "I guess the first record had some kind of country-ish leanings and things [but] I think there's maybe a little bit more of [that] feeling on it, a little more down-home, I guess, and not so much indie rock." [Read the rest of the interview from last year here]

Band of Horses has a huge following here in Austin, as was evident when they SOLD OUT their secret Saturday ACL Aftershow at The Parish in a little less than two hours. If you weren't lucky enough to get tickets, check out what the sponsors, Blurt, had to say.
"For those of you who weren't able to get a ticket today, there may be a small quantity of tickets made available the day of the show, so look for updates on BLURT-ONLINE.COM next week and check in at the Parish Room box office a few hours before the doors open," says BLURT Associate Editor Andy Tennille. "We're also going to be giving away some tickets at BLURT-ONLINE.COM and through some of the local radio stations in Austin, so keep your eyes peeled and your wits about you."

ACL Spotlight: Jenny Lewis

Fresh off Rilo Kiley's Under the Blacklight tour, the band's founder and co-lead singer Jenny Lewis will release Acid Tongue on Sept. 23. This comes two years after her internationally-acclaimed solo debut, Rabbit Fur Coat.

Although Acid Tongue is Lewis' first major label effort as a solo artist, no expensive, fancy recording tools were used. The result is a beautifully haunting collection of 11 all-analog tracks that aren't as retro as its recording method suggests, but don't quite belong in this decade either.

Lewis is sans Watson Twins this time around, but she keeps up the tradition of all-star collaborators on Acid Tongue, including Johnathan Rice, Rilo Kiley drummer Jason Boesel, Farmer Dave Scher, M. Ward and Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes. Elvis Costello joins Lewis for a duet on "Carpetbaggers" and Zooey Deschanel and Vanessa Corbala provide backing vocals.

ACL Spotlight: Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups have come a long way in the past few years. It is well deserved though. In Austin alone the band went from playing in front of a small group at Longbranch Inn a few years ago to a prime slot at this years festival. I was fortunate enough blog with them on one of there earlier tours and they are a must see this year.

They have been hiding out as of late but hopefully that means we will treated to some new material.

ACL Spotlight: Okkervil River

Many people may not realize, but Okkervil River have been around since 1998. The band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya. Their members may have changed over the years, but there remains one constant, singer and Will Sheff. His amazing songwriting fits perfectly with the band's intricate music.

They formed here in Austin and they have numerous EPs and also five albums in their catalog: Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See (2002), Down the River of Golden Dreams (2003), Black Sheep Boy (2005), The Stage Names (2007), and The Stand Ins which was released earlier this month.

In addition to releasing a new record, Okkervil River also have their own page on Youtube which shows other musicians such as Bon Iver and David Vandervelde performing covers of songs off The Stand Ins.

Here's what some had to say about The Stand Ins:
"[Okkervil River] are a ban poised for greatness, and The Stand Ins may very well be the record to take them there. 9/10"
-Popmatters

"Frentically catchy...Okkervil River builds each flimsy illusion as if, for the moment, it's all that matters."
-The New York Times

Notable performances include opening for Lou Reed at the grand opening of New York's Highline Ballroom, performing on Conan O' Brien, and as the backup band for Roky Erickson at the Austin Music Awards at this year's SXSW. They've also played with The New Pornographers and The Decemberists.

ACL Spotlight: Jamie Lidell

The soulful Jamie Lidell is definitely an act not to miss at this year's Austin City Limits. His voice has been compared to Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and even, the legendary Stevie Wonder.

A few years back we got to see him open for Beck at the Backyard and he was a one-man beatboxing, looping, dancing, and don't forget singing machine that did more than warm up the crowd. Hopefully this time, we can see his whole set. Now he's added a full band to join him onstage.

The Dell Dome at ACL

The Austin based computer company Dell, has been getting involved in the music scene over the past few years with the Dell Lounge project which is becoming a multi-faceted outlet for all things music. This summer has the Dell Summer Rocks project traveling around the country making stops at all of the hottest music festivals taking place this festival season. They recently stopped at The Monolith Music Festival in Denver and gave festival attendees a chance to take in an awesome experience.

The last stop on the Dell Summer Rocks calendar will be the local Austin City Limits Festival.

At the Dell Dome festival attendees can:

-Meet your favorite band, watch them do an interview in person and get their autograph.

-Make your own digital mixtape by building a playlist using music from the festival as well as popular artists beyond Monolithís set list.

-Design custom buttons. One can use designs on hand or bring their own to stamp into creative flare.

-Get an airbrush tattoo or your hair rocked out

-Meet Dell resident artist, Mike Ming. http://www.delllounge.com/ summerrocks/mikeming/. Mike Ming created the artwork for Dell’s limited edition Mike Ming Inspiron laptops and he designed the
artwork on the Dell Dome.

-Make a custom tee. One can create their own style by transferring

-Mike Ming’s artwork onto their own clothes through the hot-press t- shirt station.

-Check your email and surf the net on Dell’s collection of laptops.

Participating bands who have visited and done interviews at the Dell Summer Rocks Dome at festivals thus far include Chromeo, Girl Talk, Cadence Weapon, Shudder To Think, Taking Back Sunday, Soulwax, Kaki King, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Flosstradamus, The Octopus Project, Franki Chan, Witchcraft, Tiny Masters of Today, The Whigs and more.

ACL Spotlight: José González

José González is a indie folk singer-songwriter of Argentine descent who grew up in Sweden. His sound is described as solo classical guitar with soft vocal melody. He grew up listening to Latin folk and pop music, citing his favorite artist as being Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez.

González released his debut album Veneer in September 2005, which includes the singles, "Crosses", which is one of four songs he contributed to Zero 7's The Garden and "Heartbeats", which is a cover of fellow Swedes, The Knife. On another song, "Lovestain" his lyrics are heartfelt, "You left a lovestain on my heart/And you left a bloodstain on the ground/But blood comes off easily". I first discovered Veneer from a good friend of mine who is a guitar player himself and has great taste in music. A year after Veneer was released Richard and I were fortunate enough to see González perform at a small bar in San Antonio called Limelight. We sat on the side of the stage, no more than ten from him as he took the stage with just a chair and an acoustic guitar. He provided percussion by tapping his foot on the floor.

For his second album, González kept his classical guitar sound but added a few new sounds as well. He recruited Erik Bodin (percussion), Håkan Wirenstrand (synthesizer), and Yukimi Nagano (backing vocals) on his sophomore album. In Our Nature was released in September 2007 via Mute Records and includes a cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop", which we saw him perform a year earlier at Limelight. Asked about In Our Nature, he told NME, "I like playing with symbolism," said the Swedish singer-songwriter of the new album. "On this album I've wanted to bring out the primitive aspects of human beings."

ACL Spotlight: Fleet Foxes

Fleet Foxes were a late surprise addition to this year's Austin City Limits Festival, after taking over for Ingrid Michaelson. The Seattle band has already been to Austin a few times this year, once for SXSW and the other a SOLD OUT show at Mohawk in July. They've also toured with Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie. Very impressive for a band with a couple of EPs, Fleet Foxes (self-released) and Sun Giant, and just one album, Fleet Foxes released via Sub Pop.

[Buy Sun Giant EP]
[Buy Fleet Foxes Album]

The five young members of Fleet Foxes are in their early twenties but their lyrics suggest otherwise. Their music draws influence from a number of great bands, but The Beach Boys and Crosby Stills & Nash seem to be the most apparent to me. This is a band I can honestly say is for fans of any age to enjoy. They blend folk, rock, and harmonies together so beautifully. A bunch of bloggers love them (including us), Pitchfork loves them, Rolling Stone loves them, Black Cab Sessions love them, Daytrotter loves them, we think you get the point!

We recommend checking out their Lillywhite Sessions from NPR and a live concert at the Black Cat in D.C. also from NPR featuring 12 songs.
