Echotone Austin Premiere | April 24th - April 27th at Alamo Drafthouse Downtown

Echotone (check for showtimes)

After having the opportunity to screen the film during the Austin Film Festival last year we are happy to announce that the film will have it's official Austin premiere at The Alamo Ritz on April 24th through April 27th and we are ridiculously proud to be sponsors of this event. The film is a perfect snapshot of a very special time in the Austin music scene and we highly recommend catching a screening. The trailer, more info on the film and links to perfect tickets are all below.

Reversal Films is proud to announce the opening of the new music documentary Echotone at the Alamo Ritz on Sunday, April 24th. The film is set in Austin, Texas, and immerses itself in the city’s rapidly evolving music environment and the growing pains that surround it. The film focuses on the city’s plentiful and potent creative class, examining their struggle to hold on and forge ahead in a city on the rise.

The film follows Austin musicians like Black Joe Lewis, Cari Palazolo and Bill Baird along their daily routines and features performances by Ghostland Observatory, The Octopus Project, the Black Angels and more. Along with live musical footage and visceral aerial views of the city in development, Echotone also includes passionate debates with artists and city music leaders on issues like urban planning, sustainability, artistic integrity and rabid independence.

One of the central themes of Echotone, how musicians and creatives try to find their place in a developing city, is an issue that extends well beyond Texas and should be familiar to anyone actively involved in music scenes on the rise around the country.

Echotone will be available nationwide on September 6, 2011.

April 25 at 7pm [Tickets]
April 26 at 7pm [Tickets]

Tonight! Lean Hounds, The Nouns, Low Times and These Are Words at The Ghost Room

We are taking a break from all this pre-SXSW madness to sponsor an awesome show with awesome people tonight at the Ghost Room. Some of Austin's best and brightest on stage and absolutely no cover charge. Doors are at 9pm and all the other info is below. See you there!

My grandfather always used to say "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb," and local party enthusiasts Knuckle Rumbler seem to be taking that literally with their next round of shows at the Ghost Room on March 3rd, sponsored by The Republic of Austin, Ultra8201 and Red River Noise. Last month it was free Harpoon, this month it's free entry, which means more funds for the Ghost Room special (a shot of Jack and an ice cold Pearl) and plenty of merch, which you'll be eager to snatch up in the wake of Lean Hounds and the rest of the bill. Ex-members of Haunting Oboe Music, Lean Hounds conjure the same raw, biting overtones as early Modest Mouse with their stripped-down approach, only the euphoric, wavering synth lines that hover off in the distance make you feel as though your Baby Blue Sedan is submerged in water. These Are Words build you up for Lean Hounds with their twangy, off-kilter burst of composed aggression that takes the form overcast surf guitar and cosmically entrancing vocals. The Nouns and Low Times get you started with their uptempo, eclectic blend of angst-driven rock which starts promptly at 9:00, so make sure you scrounge up the free cover and get to the Ghost Room in time to catch all the revelry before it's too late.

March 3rd @ The Ghost Room
304 W. 4th Street
with Lean Hounds, The Nouns, These Are Words, My Womans Angry
Doors @ 9pm, cover: FREE SHOW
This show is 21+ only

These Are Words

Ultra8201 Turns 5 | February 17th at Malverde

Join us February 17th at Malverde as we celebrate 5 years in the blog game. That's 5 years of drunk blogging, procrastination, +1's, undeserved VIP credentials and other kinds of randomness. What started out as a hobby has turned into something really special over the years and I want to thank everyone that has read, supported and worked with us over the years in person so please join us. The extremely talented Learning Secrets DJ's have been kind enough to share their weekly with us and will be spinning throughout the evening. There is no cover and we will have drink specials all night. The party begins immediately after the Robyn show at ACL Live. If you read this blog you are probably going to be there and Malverde is right across the street! Ahh convenience......

The Bleet-Up Is Coming....

If you spend most of your day checking out blogs, tweeting and checking into Gowalla hot spots then this is the party for you. This is the party where you get meet all these people you admire from your computer and actually meet them face to face.

We had such a huge turn out last year that this time around we thought we would give ourselves a little more breathing room so we are taking over the rooftop terrace at Whole Foods HQ downtown. Everything thing you need in one place. Samples of both food and drinks, pop up shops for you fashionistas and a full size skating rink.

Music provided by Politics, The Lennings and MoTel Aviv all performing live along with special guests 23 Positions covering all of Princes classics. uLovei will do DJ sets throughout the night. Here is your guide:

THE BLEET UP SURVIVAL TIPS:

1. Get There Early - It's going to fill up early and you don't want to be left out. There is a capacity and once we reach it it's one in one out.
2. Bring Cash - The cover is $7 and there are a lot of samples to try. Make sure you have your cover ready and plenty of tip money.
3. Tweet It - This is a social networking party after all. Make sure to tweet all night and use the hash tag #bleetup.

THE MUSIC:

MoTel Aviv are an Austin foursome with a particularly potent brand of poppy rock and roll. Their major strength is in the songwriting. When all systems are firing 100 percent, it’s hard to find fault in MoTel Aviv’s assembly of the moving parts or their delivery of a hook. If the jangling, ringing guitar work doesn’t get you, you ignore the stomping beat and you’re somehow impervious to a chorus that easily gets lodged auditory canal like an earwig, then, who knows, you might be allergic to fun. - Austinist

“The Lennings, vocally and musically, continue to brilliantly manipulate an impossible thread of continuity that links folk to rock to Americana to indie pop.” -Amanda Warr, Best of Texas.com

This Austin alt-indie group can be found regularly at some of Austin’s favorite rock haunts like Mohawk and The Parish performing with other local acts such as The Authors, MoTel Aviv and Whitman. The music of Politics is thankfully much less complicated and messy than the practice of politics. Layered guitars pinging and fuzzed out are in league with the blended pulse of the rhythm section and the echo of haunting vocals. “Light In Your Eyes” is a great place to start - Austinist

23 Positions

Something like this.....

Miguel Angel's style would best be described as a mix between Radioclit and New Order with a little touch of Roy Orbison. He also has a bit of a punk-rock back ground, so dont be surprised if you here a some The Clash dropped with a little cumbia. - Art Disaster.com

The Weekend

We have all sorts of things for you to get into this weekend so I thought why not make a post to remind everyone of where they need to be. Tomorrow night at Stubbs we are presenting two great up and coming local bands. Politics and Candi and The Strangers will be taking stage starting at 10pm and the cover is only $5.

Then Sunday morning comes the game we have been waiting for. The World Cup title match. We have teamed up with The ND, Knuckle Rumbler, The Mind of Adi, Frank, Recspec and Austin Town Hall to present the game on a 30ft HD screen with plenty of seating, full bar service and Orion spinning during the breaks. After a month of bar hopping to catch the game I can't think of a better way to watch the title match.

And one more thing. We want to thank everyone that voted for us on the ACL Festival website and got us picked as one of the most popular blogs in Texas. We will be doing profiles on The xx, The Morning Benders and Girls for the Artist Discovery series and it will be featured on the ACL website in starting in August. So again THANK YOU!!

Show Spotlight: Maluca at The ND (Tonight!)

Maluca02 by angryfggt.

Born in the Bronx and raised in Manhattan by Dominican parents, Maluca is that increasingly rare bird- a downtown girl who brings together the classic cool, glamour, grit and passion of New York City in an instant! After meeting Diplo at a karaoke bar, the two starting working together resulting in her debut single “El Tigeraso” (coming via Mad Decent), an infectious track that draws on her Dominican electro merengue roots.

Austin’s hardest working DJ, DJ Orion will be opening up the night along with Palms Out Sounds’ own Dubbel Dutch.

Huge thanks to the Travis County Democratic Party for helping us bring this incredible artist to Austin. The TCDP has always involved itself in interesting events and gone out of its way to get young people involved in politics and social causes. They will be on site through out the party getting people registered to vote.

The Ultra8201 Birthday Celebration | June 10th at The Parish with L.A.X, Love at 20 and Politics

I am very proud to announce and invite everyone to my birthday celebration Thursday June 10th at The Parish [RSVP]. Not to be confused with the anniversary show a few months back this time we are celebrating my actual birthday. I almost went the traditional way of having a quiet dinner and then getting together with some friends but that didn't just feel right. I am a music blogger and throw parties for every other occasion so why not have a show? And if I was going to have a show why not have some of the most exciting bands in Austin come and play it. So that is exactly what I did and here is the line up. Joining me in the celebration will be L.A.X, Love at 20 and Politics. The talented Alison Narro will be on hand with the photo booth we have come to know, love and expect in Austin. All the proceeds from the show will benefit Ultra8201 so instead of having to look for that perfect gift (kidding) you will be giving me a little help to make the site even better. In return I promise a night of great music and a really good time. Not a bad deal right?

A huge thanks to our sponsors and friends at Do512, Knuckle Rumbler, Sailor Legs, Austin Eavesdropper, uLovei, The Glitoris and The Peen Scene.

I would be shocked if you haven't heard these bands by now but just in case....

and remember to...[RSVP] $6/$8 w/o

L.A.X [Listen]

L.A.X began in 2005 with Andrew Collins and Erin Jantzen as an electro duo with a fresh sound and invigorating live performance. In 2007, they self-released "The L EP", an eclectic hybrid of electronic dance tracks that quickly established the group in the heart of the Austin, TX party scene. By early 2009, the duo had grown three-fold, adding Yadira Brown (Vocals), Jon Oswald (Drums), Rory Allen Phillips (Guitar), Chris D'Annunzio (Bass), and occasionally joined by Santiago Vela (percussion). These additions have expanded the group's musical range and elevated their status as a must-see live act. Collins thrives on cultural fusions apparent from the hip hop elements of "Don’t Push" to the reggaeton anthem, "Sacuda las Caderas". Jantzen and Brown, lead vocals, lure and dazzle the listener with unprecedented lyrics and melodies. Their breakthrough performances at 2009's ACL Festival, Fun Fun Fun Fest and SXSW 2010 have been followed up with a solid string of shows in Austin and other cities around Texas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. L.A.X has worked their way up in the ranks of the Austin music scene and is a prime contender for opening and after party slots for the heavy hitting electronic acts that filter through Austin’s large venues. Thus far, L.A.X has opened for Kraak and Smaak, The Juan McLean, and Glass Candy and had the headlining slot for C3‘s Cut Copy after show at Stubbs. In May, the group released their highly anticipated sophomore effort, "The A EP", celebrating with shows in Austin, Houston and Dallas, TX. The Parish hosted the Austin event on May 20th, “The A EP Remixes” is available for digital purchase. [Source]

LOVE AT 20 [Listen]
Featuring Former members of Austin’s “Clap! Clap!” (Mike Groener, vox/piano/guitar; Louis Lemuz, bass; Mark Toohey, drums) have come together to assemble a newer and more polished (rock) version of their illustrious dance sound. With guitar-driven hooks and lyrics that are dying to be sung along with, Love at 20 desires to be where solid chart-toppers are today (but no auto-tune here, thank goodness). If Maroon 5’s Adam Levine was more into Brit rock bands like Stereophonics rather than Prince, he would have called his band Love at 20. [Source]

POLITICS [Listen]

After first forming in 2006 the band played Austin with some of the local music scenes best and brightest. They went on to tour the west coast and performed with high profile acts like Dawes and Glass Candy. After a brief hiatus and some line up changes the band came back strong last year with performances at The Ghost Room, The Parish and Mohawk during FFF Fest. Politics will enter the studio this summer and plan for a Fall EP release.
