Show Spotlight: Classixx + Learning Secrets at the Parish

CLASSIXX: Fresh on the heels of their new single "Into the Valley" for Green Label Sound, the LA based producers/DJs are spending the summer nights marinating dance floors across the world. Barely into their twenties, Classixx has begun defining a new sound for the Los Angeles electronic music scene. A refreshing change from the trance and techno inspired Electro that has been dominating dance floors, their Donna Summer’esque grooves have caught the ears of music aficionados, fans and artists alike. Mayer Hawthrone is making his way to the ATX for a very special DJ set. Hopefully he might add some tracks from his latest project Impressions EP. Having grown up just outside the home of Motown, Detroit Michican, it is little wonder that multi instrumentalist -Mayer Hawthorne has soul pumping through his veins and sites Holland-Dozier-Holland among his biggest influences. I can only imagine all the soul he will be bringing down to us.

If a DJ set from Mayer Hawthorne wasn’t enough, we will also have live music from Soul Track Mind and KP and The Boom Boom. I am super stoked for this incredible line up and to have the show at one of my favorite venues, The Scoot Inn. The party will kick off at 9pm.

The Love Language, initiated by Stuart McLamb, is a fortunate by-product of the North Carolina native's rudderless mid-20s, where a tempest of breakup, inebriation, and incarceration found the abandoned songwriter embarking on a storage-space recording project to slow his seeming disintegration. The growing body of emotional fight songs, committed to MP3 with a high-school era multitrack recorder, became postcards from exile, a way to let his friends and former flames know he was getting along, battered but not beaten.

We are taking a break from all this pre-SXSW madness to sponsor an awesome show with awesome people tonight at the Ghost Room. Some of Austin's best and brightest on stage and absolutely no cover charge. Doors are at 9pm and all the other info is below. See you there!

My grandfather always used to say "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb," and local party enthusiasts Knuckle Rumbler seem to be taking that literally with their next round of shows at the Ghost Room on March 3rd, sponsored by The Republic of Austin, Ultra8201 and Red River Noise. Last month it was free Harpoon, this month it's free entry, which means more funds for the Ghost Room special (a shot of Jack and an ice cold Pearl) and plenty of merch, which you'll be eager to snatch up in the wake of Lean Hounds and the rest of the bill. Ex-members of Haunting Oboe Music, Lean Hounds conjure the same raw, biting overtones as early Modest Mouse with their stripped-down approach, only the euphoric, wavering synth lines that hover off in the distance make you feel as though your Baby Blue Sedan is submerged in water. These Are Words build you up for Lean Hounds with their twangy, off-kilter burst of composed aggression that takes the form overcast surf guitar and cosmically entrancing vocals. The Nouns and Low Times get you started with their uptempo, eclectic blend of angst-driven rock which starts promptly at 9:00, so make sure you scrounge up the free cover and get to the Ghost Room in time to catch all the revelry before it's too late.

A new year, a fresh lineup of events: Knuckle Rumbler is kicking things off in a big way on February 10th, with Shapes Have Fangs headlining the first of many concerts this spring at the Ghost Room. Like a 50’s blues 45 sped up a little too fast, Shapes Have Fangs keep the surf rock flowing while lead guitarist/vocalist Dustin Coffey’s edgy melodies and thrashing guitar riffs spark like two stones struck together.

Rayon Beach gets you prepped, luring you away from the waves and back towards shore with their overdriven, echoed-out garage rock that sounds like an intermittent radio broadcast of a beach party from another dimension. 60’s blues rock-inspired three-piece The Daze and the raucously tripped out Eets Feats round out 4+ hours of Austin’s most dynamic live acts, which did we mention is all for only 5 bucks?

Red River Noise, Austin Town Hall and Republic of Austin all sponsor this event where the first 100 through the door receive a free drink, courtesy of Waterloo Ice House. Birds Barbershop will be on hand hosting a photo booth (don’t worry, there will be plenty of gaudy wigs and hairspray to go around) and future Knuckle Rumbler tickets will be raffled off throughout the night. Learning Secrets is turning 7. That is 7 years of this fine duo bringing some of the most exciting up and coming acts to town as well as legendary DJ's and promoting the finest this town has to offer. The thing that has always stood out to me about them is that they never do anything that doesn't live up to the highest of standards. They book bands months in advance of any hype and always create a vibe at their events that can't help but make you feel that you are at the right place. This Saturday they are celebrating their anniversary with a huge party at The ND.

It comes as no surprise that they would have an exciting act flown into town for the event in the form of Kisses. If you aren't familiar with the band you should be. Interview with Jesse Kivel of Kisses

You've listed Alec R. Costandinos, Grace Jones and Cerrone as influences. Are there any more contemporary artists who have influenced your sound?

I would say a lot of Swedish groups, the Sincerely Yours Crew...TTA, Air France, Jens, The Whitest Boy Alive...

In "Midnight Lover," you sing, "I want to take you out for a nice steak dinner." One can't help but smile at this line. Can you give us any insight as to why you decided to use it and how it's cohesive with the rest of the album?

I forget what compelled me to write it but I instantly enjoyed it. Not sure if it works with the rest of the album in that it is a very cool and confident line that i think is very much a character that only exists on that song or maybe one other. The album is kind of insecure lyrically if you look at it.

What are the most amazing things people can do?

Anything that a person finds difficult for them personally and they overcome to me classifies as amazing. It could be asking a girl out or performing a show...anything really

Can you give us some insight into the creative process behind Heart of the Nightlife?

Basically I wrote the tracks on nylon string guitar and wrote them all in a row over several months. After Princeton finished recording our first album I went into our garage and recorded it on my own.

Are you both originally from LA? How has LA influenced you as artists?

I was born in NYC and Z was born in Providence. I grew up in LA though... LA is just a place with no seasons so I think it developed my imagination, forcing me to get into a mood even if it didn't exist on the outside.

You've done some touring this year. What has that taught you about yourselves as a band? How has it influenced the music you will create in the future?

It taught me that we could do it! I dont think it will influence the recording of the next record at all. The live show is a way to express the recording but we are very much a recording project first!

Here We Go Magic will be making their first of two stops in Austin tomorrow night. The band will also be in town supporting Dr.Dog on Nov. 12 but this is the headlining show and the one you shouldn't miss. The band has been on our radar for a while now and we even had them at our SXSW show in March. Since then they have played shows around the world along side White Rabbits and New Pornographers.
