So (Un)Real: Jeff Buckley Goes Hollywood

It appears that there are now two competing Jeff Buckley biopics in the works. The first announcement came in April when music video director Jake Scott was signed to direct an untitled project about the late singer/songwriter. The project received the blessing of the Jeff Buckley estate, with Jeff's mother, Mary Guibert, on as executive producer. In addition to all inclusive music rights, the project also acquired the rights to the 2001 David Browne biography, Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley.

Today, there was a big announcement that actor Penn Badgley had landed the role of Jeff Buckley for another film titled "Greetings from Tim Buckley." This project, helmed by Dan Algrant, has backing from the Tim Buckley estate. Its logline reads:

“Greetings from Tim Buckley” follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.

"Greetings from Tim Buckley" is set to start filming in August in New York. The untitled Jake Scott project is currently in preproduction and has yet to cast its leading role.

New Bon Iver | "Calgary"

Justin Vernon has easily one of the most incredible voices in music. Take a listen to the first single ("Calgary") to emerge off the new Bon Iver, Bon Iver album. Thankfully we won't have to wait too long to hear the rest of the new disc, as it's due out June 21st via Jagjagjuwar.

If you'd like to take a look at the lyrics for the new album, you can do so here. Also, if you'd like to see how Gregory Euclide came up with the beautiful artwork, he's posted the videos on Youtube (Pt. 1Pt. 2, Pt. 3) and My Love For You also has an interview with him detailing the process.

Little Scream | "Red Hunting Jacket" Video

As talented as they come, Little Scream (aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer) performs vocals, guitar, violin, and keyboards on her debut album, The Golden Record. Co-produced by Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire, the disc also features contributions from Aaron Dessner (The National), Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire), and Patty McGee (Stars). And when it's all said and done, it'll surely be on many best-of-2011-lists (ours should be no exception).

The amazing stop-motion video (which must have taken forever) up above for "Red Hunting Jacket" was directed by Rachel Granofsky.

Foals | "Spanish Sahara" Video

Ever since catching Foals at Lollapalooza a few years back, we've been anticipating a second performance. This time however we don't have to travel far at all. The band will be here in the capital of Texas during October for this year's Austin City Limits Festival. While we haven't had the time to give their sophomore album (Total Life Forever) a proper listen, we've been digging one of their new songs, entitled "Spanish Sahara". Check out the video down below and be sure to not make the mistake of missing them at ACL in a few months (they play on Sunday by the way).

New Ratatat | "Party With Children"

Ratatat's new album LP4 (due out June 8th) was recorded during the LP3 sessions. The band describes the new record as 'weirder' than it previous work, with a much braver approach to the arrangements. With that being said, more instruments appear on the new album, including a full string section. It also features a number of spoken word interludes, one taken from Werner Herzog’s film Stroszeck in which the lead character Bruno S describes the keyboards he owns. The other samples are all courtesy of Linda Manz, the first taken from Terence Mallick’s period drama Days Of Heaven.

Expect a U.S. Fall tour to be announced in the near future. Until then, take a listen to the first single off LP4, "Party With Children".

Shearwater Release More Info on The Golden Archipelago

ole-861
As we alluded to last week, Shearwater plans to release their new album The Golden Archipelago on Feb. 23rd via Matador. Since then a little more info on the album has surfaced, including a new song entitled "Castaways". Take a listen down below.

Shearwater - Castaways (mp3)

Taken from Matablog:
The album is the third in a triptych of "mindblowingly beatiful, dense and ambitious excursions about man's impact on the natural world".

This time singer-songwriter Jonathan Meiburg turns his attention to life on islands – a world of lushness and austerity, silence and sudden cataclysms. From rising sea levels to displaced populations, Meiburg travels from the Falklands to Madgascar, from the Bikini Atoll to the Tierra Del Fuego.

The CD comes packaged with a 50-page perfect-bound book that is a set of extracts from a dossier of records, photos, regulations and images collected by Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg. The LP contains 2 bonus tracks & an MP3 download coupon (that includes the album + PDF of the dossier).

Preorder the album, and receive a 15% discount.

New Holly Miranda | "Forest Green Oh Forest Green"

Tonight's the night. We finally get to see The xx! Make sure and get to tonight's SOLD OUT show at the Mohawk early enough to check out the other opener, Holly Miranda. She sounds fantastic! We're hoping she plays her cover of Pink Floyd's "Breathe". The doors open at 8 by the way.

Update: Looks like Holly Miranda had to cancel her opening duties tonight because of a stomach flu. Bummer! Hopefully she'll be back soon enough. Thanks to our twitter friends @ryanljames and @aster_alone for the heads up. You should follow them.

Miranda's debut album The Magician's Private Library is due out on Feb. 23. Produced by Dave Sitek, it includes contributions from himself, Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton (TV On The Radio), Eric Biondo and Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), and Holly’s long-time violinist, Marques Toliver. Listen to the first single "Forest Green Oh Forest Green" down below. [Via]
