Show Spotlight: Blank Fritz, Missions, Spells and Sorne at The Ghost Room (Tonight)

We are winding down to the last few shows at The Ghost Room before it closes it's doors and tonight Knuckle Rumbler has a great one for you. Blank Fritz (formerly Sunset), Missions, Spells (formerly MothFight) and Sorne all for only $5. I notice I have been doing a lot of (formerly)'s lately. What's with bands changing their names all the time? And while were on the subject why are they Sunset on the Gorilla vs Bear bill but Blank Fritz on this one? And when did they lose the {{{ }}}?? Is it time for me to change my name and play the (formerly Ultra8201) card? These questions plague me... Whatever he goes by Bill Baird is one of Austin's greatest talents and Missions are phenomenal so DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW. Oh and if you show up on a bike you get $1 Lone Star!

Sunset | "Loveshines II" Video, Tour Dates

(dir. by Canopy's Praveen Ayyagari)

Austin's Sunset have just finished a new album and I imagine will be testing some of those new songs on the road (tour dates down below).

While on tour they'll also be selling a "greatest hits" CD, which they really consider an intro to the band's many releases over the past two years and will also come with an accompanying DVD of live performaces. As of now, this will be a "tour exclusive" item that will set you back only $5. (via)

New Sunset | "Pocketful of Debt"

Web

As we mentioned last week, Sunset will be releasing a new album on Nov. 24th. Entitled Gold Dissolves to Gray, it's described as, "most similar in spirit to Bill Baird’s eponymous solo debut {{{SUNSET}}} and the early Sound Team material, with a natural touch for blending analog electronics with folk song. Yet, it is the clearest and most matured display of Bill Baird’s talents to date."

Take a listen down below to to one of the tracks, "Pocketful of Debt" and also watch a video the band recorded of "Fishtown" for Weathervane Music. If you feel so inclined, you can pre-order the album here.

Sunset - Pocketful of Debt (mp3)

{{{Sunset}}} to perform at MyOpen Bar and Drambuie's: Cinema 16, Austin (11/13)

"MyOpenBar and Drambuie Present:
CINEMA 16, AUSTIN

CINEMA 16 is a pairing of obscure vintage film programs with live scores composed and performed by specially chosen musicians, recreating the shared experience and awe of the 1920's silent film era. Austin is one of four stops on Cinema 16's nationwide film tour. This unique event will feature screenings by Mark Street ("Blue Movie" 16mm - 1994) and Ron Rice ("Chumlum" - 1964) and will be accompanied by a live performance from Austin's very own {{{SUNSET}}} who have so graciously scored the film.

The program is to include:

Blue Movie (1994)
Mark Street's 16mm short of repeated performances culled from old porno films and hand-painted. A man bends over a body, but what we really notice is the texture of the wall behind him. A woman stares back at the viewer with annoyance.

and

Chumlum, (1964)
Ron Rice's footage of the making of Normal Love with Jack Smith and some of his cast portrays the whimsical and sensual interactions between actors. The textural piece draws from experimental traditions as it flashes from flesh to color to movement.

The event will feature the screening both films and scores performed live by {{{SUNSET}}}, who have written an original soundtrack specifically composed for this occasion, DJ after-sets from DJ Wazaaaaap, and complementary drinks provided by Drambuie.

Peel announces last show (for a while)

Just wanted to let you know about a blow-out next Friday, July 31st, at Bill Baird's new east side studio, Baby Blue.  Peel singer/guitarist Josh Permenter has decided follow in Doug Sahm's footsteps and move on out to San Francisco for a stretch, so this will be Peel's last show for a good while. As with any proper send-off, there will be kegs (plural).  Peel's friends {{{Sunset}}} and Little Stolen Moments will also be performing. The shin-dig gets rolling around 9pm.

Sunset Announces 2009 U.S. Summer Tour Dates

sunsettour1

We were truly sad when Austin's Sound Team broke up, but taking their place was Sunset, a project founded by former bassist Bill Baird. Last year, they released an honest, beautiful record entitled, The Glowing City. Stream the entire thing at imeem or just go ahead and get yourself a copy for $9 via local label Autobus. Their newest project (released last month) is the 7" Loveshines II, which we alluded to last year.

Sunset is ready to hit the road this Summer and kicks it off with a show this Thursday at Baby Blue Studio (E. 12th between Comal and Chicon).

Sunset - Zombies (mp3)

Email Bill Baird at blondebill (at) gmail.com if you can help with any of the open dates on the West Coast and also for details on some of the shows with vague location details. We'll also try to update this post with more details as they come.

This Friday :: The Great Nostalgic Album Release Party w/ {{{Sunset}}}, The Sour Notes at Hole in the Wall

releasepartyposter

This Friday sure is a busy night (w/ Death Cab for Cutie, Monarchs, Paul Green School of Rock, The Tunnels all playing shows) and although we mentioned this show on our weekly recommendations on Monday, we thought it deserved a post of it's own.

Relatively new Austin band, The Great Nostalgic is performing this Friday at Hole in the Wall with {{{Sunset}}} and The Sour Notes to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut (read glowing reviews from Austin Town Hall and Two Groove). Bonus discs, which include remixes from Many Birthdays and Businessman DJs, in addition to a music video for "Queen and Country" will be given out as well with the purchase of the new album ($8). The show starts at 10PM and will feature guest musicians from Pink Nasty and Hard Proof Afrobeat's horn section.
