Learning Secrets presents In Flagranti at Beauty Bar | June 11

In Flagranti encapsulates all aspects of throw away culture from the 70s with both the music and visuals that made it a must. Sasa Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor of In Flagranti, work with a formula for club hits that was both unique and new in 2002 when they formed, and has now become synonymous within DJing circles and the dance music world. Best described as a sonic collage of twisted sounds from an era that no-one should ever forget, with a mild hint of disco and punk, the duo has maintained a cult following and mystique that grows stronger and deeper with each release on their own Codek Records.

This Saturday, June 11th Austin's own disco duo, Orthy and Thomas-Austin of Learning Secrets, will be hosting In Flagranti's first trip to Texas at their next classic LS party at the Beauty Bar.

Ultra8201 Turns 5 | February 17th at Malverde

Join us February 17th at Malverde as we celebrate 5 years in the blog game. That's 5 years of drunk blogging, procrastination, +1's, undeserved VIP credentials and other kinds of randomness. What started out as a hobby has turned into something really special over the years and I want to thank everyone that has read, supported and worked with us over the years in person so please join us. The extremely talented Learning Secrets DJ's have been kind enough to share their weekly with us and will be spinning throughout the evening. There is no cover and we will have drink specials all night. The party begins immediately after the Robyn show at ACL Live. If you read this blog you are probably going to be there and Malverde is right across the street! Ahh convenience......

Learning Secrets 7th Anniversary w/ Kisses + Interview / Ticket Giveaway

Learning Secrets is turning 7. That is 7 years of this fine duo bringing some of the most exciting up and coming acts to town as well as legendary DJ's and promoting the finest this town has to offer. The thing that has always stood out to me about them is that they never do anything that doesn't live up to the highest of standards. They book bands months in advance of any hype and always create a vibe at their events that can't help but make you feel that you are at the right place. This Saturday they are celebrating their anniversary with a huge party at The ND.

It comes as no surprise that they would have an exciting act flown into town for the event in the form of Kisses. If you aren't familiar with the band you should be. Let's just say that if you miss this you will probably be kicking yourself in the next few months. We took some time to interview the band last week and have some music up so you can study up on this great band.

All the party details are below and we are giving away a pair of tickets to the party on Twitter tomorrow so go follow if you aren't already. Happy Anniversary Learning Secrets!!!!!!

Interview with Jesse Kivel of Kisses

You've listed Alec R. Costandinos, Grace Jones and Cerrone as influences. Are there any more contemporary artists who have influenced your sound?

I would say a lot of Swedish groups, the Sincerely Yours Crew...TTA, Air France, Jens, The Whitest Boy Alive...

In "Midnight Lover," you sing, "I want to take you out for a nice steak dinner." One can't help but smile at this line. Can you give us any insight as to why you decided to use it and how it's cohesive with the rest of the album?

I forget what compelled me to write it but I instantly enjoyed it. Not sure if it works with the rest of the album in that it is a very cool and confident line that i think is very much a character that only exists on that song or maybe one other. The album is kind of insecure lyrically if you look at it.

What are the most amazing things people can do?

Anything that a person finds difficult for them personally and they overcome to me classifies as amazing. It could be asking a girl out or performing a show...anything really

Can you give us some insight into the creative process behind Heart of the Nightlife?

Basically I wrote the tracks on nylon string guitar and wrote them all in a row over several months. After Princeton finished recording our first album I went into our garage and recorded it on my own.

Are you both originally from LA? How has LA influenced you as artists?

I was born in NYC and Z was born in Providence. I grew up in LA though... LA is just a place with no seasons so I think it developed my imagination, forcing me to get into a mood even if it didn't exist on the outside.

You've done some touring this year. What has that taught you about yourselves as a band? How has it influenced the music you will create in the future?

It taught me that we could do it! I dont think it will influence the recording of the next record at all. The live show is a way to express the recording but we are very much a recording project first!

Show Spotlight: Erol Alkan at Republic Live

From Learning Secrets:

Legend, hero, role model, just damned amazing...yes Erol Alkan is all that! We couldn't be more excited or more honored to have Mr. Alkan be our special guest for the April edition of Learning Secrets! Not only that, but we're proud to announce that Learning Secrets is one of his only US dates aside from SF and Coachella! Texas, we want to see you all here!

From running the legendary and highly influencial TRASH! party in London, to producing some of the biggest dance remixes (Justice's "Water of Nazareth", Hot Chip's "Boy From School", Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Want To", Klaxons' "Golden Skans", Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Zero"), to producing some of the UK's most forward thinking bands (Mystery Jets, Late Of The Pier, Long Blondes), to his odd psych-rock dance hybrid alter ego Beyond The Wizard Sleeve, to his new work with Boys Noize, Erol Alkan is pretty much DJ royalty in our eyes!

His Bugged Out mix is classic, his new track 'Death Suite' with Boyz Noize is total bonkers, and if you've ever had the priviledge of seeing him DJ you know the true magicalness of his talent. Erol Alkan has played an intergral part in creating and progressing the current shape of dance music, and, there is no doubt that if it wasn't for Erol Alkan, or his legendary TRASH! party, there would be no Learning Secrets! Thursday, April 15th, Austin, TX will finally get experience what thousands upon thousands of music fans, both of the electronic world and the rock world have known for years!

Learning Secrets Residents Ian Orth and Thomas'Austin open the night, along with an opening set from Bill Converse (MENRG), and a live set from Survive.

We're also super excited to announce that this event is 18+!

8201 Interview - J.G Wilkes of Optimo

This Thursday J.G Wilkes of Optimo (Espacio) will make his way down to Beauty Bar for a very special set along with our good friends at Learning Secrets. We figured those not familiar with Wilkes should know a little bit more about him and we were able to get a few questions in before tomorrow nights show. Of course after that if you haven't yet go ahead and make sure you RSVP. Cover will only be $3 ($5 w/o) after that. Also Papst Tall Boys will be 2 bucks all night and Sailor Jerry will be serving complimentary rum while supplies last. So get there early. Onto the interview....

Tell us a little about the Club Optimo. What were your early aspirations for the club?

Optimo, the club, is our weekly Sunday night party at Sub Club, Jamaica Street, Glasgow. It’s a basement venue right downtown, holds about 500 people, low ceiling, simple lighting and a great Martin Audio soundsystem. It’s dark and hot. We took the name “Optimo” from a song by Liquid Liquid. Most people use simply “Optimo” although the full name of the party is “Optimo (Espacio)”. The party started in November 1997 and still runs weekly.

In ’97 both Keith (my partner JD Twitch) and I had been DJ-ing for about 10 years, playing techno parties in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Just at that time we really felt dance music was gong nowhere. It was monotonous, the clubs were populated mainly by males and there was an aggressive atmosphere in a lot of places. The whole experience of going out and playing in dance parties was getting grim.

Our early aspirations were nothing more than that we wanted to have a party was FUN to be at and somewhere we could play whatever we wanted – really literally, whatever we wanted. DJ-ing became really fun again and to our surprise people really connected with it. It had to be somewhere we could present live music too - mainly local bands at the start, then more widely known stuff. In the first year we booked a few dj’s (Ashley Beadle, Marshall Jefferson, IF, Harvey) but since ’98 we’ve only booked live artists.

The concept of Optimo is originally conceived as a club night which still remains to this day. When out on the road what are some of the elements you hope to see that differ from what you are used to back in Scotland?

Yes, our early aspirations for “Optimo” ie. those of throwing a party which is really fun to play at and where anything goes are still the way we think about dj-ing today and still why we continue looking for new music to play or show live. Touring as dj’s is full of surprises, especially if it’s a party or a city you haven’t played before. Not knowing what way it’s going to go until you show up at the club is part of the thrill but then you only have what you have in your box… so it’s a challenge too.

You have hosted bands like Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem and The Presets over the years. What new bands are you excited about?

We’ve had some great new bands at the club in 2009. My favourite Glasgow band are called “Divorce” and have to be seen to be believed! “Health” from LA was awesome when they played a few months back. “Cold Cave” from Philly played (in a cave!!!) at our Halloween party and were really great. Joakim’s live project “Joakim and the Disco” gets better every time I see it and for that kind of “live dance music” thing it’s really cool.

When playing without (Optimo partner) JD Twitch what elements of your set tend to change? How do your styles differ?

When Keith and I play together (which is most of the time), we play 30 minutes about then toward the end we play together, record about. It’s really fun and gives the set a real energy – it really keep you on your toes! Playing alone is different in that any drastic changes in direction are up to you and not something you maybe only have a few seconds to respond to. I suppose there’s chance to think further down the line which is a different approach – not necessarily better but just different, I enjoy both. Keith uses Ableton Live about 50/50 with vinyl whereas I use only vinyl to mix.

As the year comes to an end what was your most memorable moment of 2009? Whether it be during a gig or other wise?

It’s a bummer, but truthfully, my most memorable moment of 2009 is a moment a few months back when my car collided at full speed with another car. I just can’t get it out of my head. I had my two kids with me, it was terrifying…. The kids were fine, thank God but the feeling just before the moment of impact – all the stuff that flashed through my mind and the feeling of the smash itself is something I’ll never forget as long as I live. It was the other driver’s fault btw!
That aside, it’s been an amazing year for gigs and for music. Looking forward to “Learning Secrets!

Learning Secrets presents J.G Wilkes of Optimo at Beauty Bar (12/10)

A couple of weeks ago when we finished up our round of Fun Fun Fun Fest parties we thought we would take a break from sponsoring shows for the year. That plan kinda changed after a visit to Learning Secrets HQ. They went on about Optimo and how it was one of the best parties they have ever gone to. This definitely caught our attention given that they throw such fantastic parties. Long story short the show is set with J.G Wilkes making his way down to Austin. We are indeed involved and now it's time for you to be too. Here is some background info:

JG Wilkes is one half of Glasgow's weekly Sunday clubbing ritual: Optimo Espacio "Glasgow's finest underground clubbing institution". Wilkes dj's from vinyl, incorporating cross genre records with the common thread of a real groove - be it disco, reggae, shuffle, wonky rock'n'roll or primitive electronica, and when he plays there is only one place you want to be: on your feet dancing.

As well as djing around the world, Wilkes produces and remixes at his own studio, Hottrax in Glasgow. Working with his studio partner, James Savage under the name " Naum" they have made various releases with Kompakt Records (Cologne) and produced remixes as "Naum Gabo" for many artists including Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, The Lotterboys, The Switches, Snow Patrol, Sons and Daughters, Archie Bronson Outfit and Midnight Mike.

The whole thing goes down Thursday December 10th. If you RSVP now (and we suggest you do) cover will only be $3 bucks / $5 w/out. Can we sweeten the deal with $2 Papst Tall boys? Done. Also, keep an eye out next week for our interview with Wilkes and a chance to win tickets to the show. Plus our good friends at Birds Barbershop will also be giving away tickets on 12/9 at the E. 6th Street location. Keep an eye out for that too.

Show Spotlight: Holy Ghost at Barcelona | Friday (10/16)

This Friday, October 16th at Barcelona, the guys from Learning Secrets (the guys that just threw that insane party with Phoenix, Voxtrot, and Survive) have another totally ridiculous night planned! This time around they're bringing in none other than the new saviors of disco, Holy Ghost! (DFA Records / NYC) for a night of straight up and down four-on-the-floor body jacking!

The Holy Ghost! fellas have been rearranging dance floors ever since DFA released their huge single "Hold On" two years ago. Over the past two years they've been remixing high profile bands like Cut Copy, MGMT, and Phoenix, releasing some of the raddest music videos we've seen in a long time, and stockpiling a collection of old synths that makes us feel a bit uncomfortable.

RSVPing gets you in for $10, if not the door is $12. You can try your hand at winning tickets for the night through us on Twitter (@ultra8201) or at either Austin Eavesdropper, The Peen Scene, Austin Is Burning, or at do512.

Show Spotlight: Annie Mac at Barcelona This Saturday! (9/26)

Ever since purchasing her first decks at university, Annie Mac has DJ’d at parties for the love of it. Her skills tightened with residencies at small clubs, and much like her first forays into broadcasting, were honed anonymously. Today, she plays all over the world, and brings her favorite DJs and bands with her. After five years at the forefront of BBC Radio One’s specialist output with her show "The Mash Up," Annie Mac has recently earned herself the much-coveted role of ‘officially starting the weekend’ every Friday evening - with Pete Tong stepping down from his Friday night sessions to make way for Annie Mac, whose keen ear for a banger, wicked mash-ups, and refreshing disregard for genre snobbery have solidified her as one of the most refreshing figures in electronic music.

Annie Mac - Essential Mix | Live at Privilege Ibiza Download

‘Essentially the show is a sharing experience -- I hate the idea of sounding preachy. For me, a sense of how music makes you react is more relevant than a knowledge of exactly how it was created.’

Starting tomorrow, Annie Mac sets her sights stateside. Join us, as this widely celebrated and highly coveted performer, trendsetter, and radio personality sets out to deliver her top notch live DJ sets at a selection of North American appearances. We are truly proud to introduce Annie Mac -- one of the UK’s leading pioneers of sound and performance to this side of the globe, sure to make waves and leave a lasting imprint on our music scene as heavy as she has already within her own turf.

She will be in town this Saturday with a set at Barcelona along side Ian and Jeramy from Learning Secrets. Feel free to bother them with questions about their next party.... Oh and you can also enter win tickets at The Peen Scene. Go enter now [LINK]

So Sentimental, Not Sentimental No....

top by you.

Maybe we are getting a little ahead of ourselves but we just wanted to give you a little peek at what's going down next weekend for ACL. We are co-sponsoring back to back shows starting Thursday. We already mentioned Art Disaster no 9 a few weeks ago and if you haven't RSVP'd we really don't know what your waiting for. It's filling up fast so get on that.

Now we have another good one to tell you about. The good people at Learning Secrets are presenting what is going to prove to be the most debaucherous night of the weekend (10/2). Spin Earth, Austin is Burning and ourselves will be on hand to support the guys as they follow up last year's epic house party with Hot Chip. We can't divulge too many details yet but we can say that we will have live sets by Voxtrot and Survive followed by very special guests. It's been a minute since Voxtrot has played a show in town so that's reason enough to head out early and we promise sticking around will be very worth your while...

It all takes place on Friday, October 2nd at Beauty Bar and we will have an link to RSVP and all the info up tomorrow. We just got a little excited and couldn't wait.
