Last Night: Of Montreal at Fiesta Gardens

Of Montreal was originally scheduled to be the first big act to play at Transmission Entertainment's newly acquired venue, Radio Room. The opening of the Sixth Street venue has been pushed back indefinitely and as a result, the show was moved to the surprisingly under-utilized Fiesta Gardens. Despite some planning miscues that left the will call line snaking around the block, the locale was a perfect setting for the band's flamboyant theatrics. Animated videos, costume changes, and a performance troupe with more esoteric references than a Dennis Miller rant kept the crowd highly energized.

The playlist contained an evenhanded sampling of the band's catalog, though clearly the crowd favored tracks from last year's excellent Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?. Kevin Barnes and company were firing on all cylinders as they launched into A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger. As Kevin "felt the darkness of the black metal bands" the crowd felt the lightness of the bright glam band. My only complaint was that instead of the dozen or so tracks I was still hoping to hear, the band decided to do a cover for their one song encore. But at that point the band had earned the right to try to out-Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand. Which they did. Perhaps my concert cohort summed it up best; "THIS is a show!" Indeed.

Radio Room Won't Open Until Next Spring

Transmission Entertainment's Radio Room is a new music venue in Austin. It's located at 508 E. 6th St. (formerly Bourbon Rocks). The 1,000 capacity club was supposed to play host to Of Montreal this November 13, but there's been a change in plans. Radio Room will instead open next Spring. The show will still go on, but it's been moved to Fiesta Gardens (2101 Bergman Ave.). You can buy tickets for the show here for $18.
With T.E.’s Fun Fun Fun Fest on the horizon for Nov. 8 and 9, the gang has got plenty to do besides rush open a club, so co-owner Michael Terrazos (Club DeVille) says, “we’re looking at an early spring opening.” Imagine the 1,000-capacity Room, Radio will be up and running by the second weekend in March. Looks like just in time for SXSW...

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2008 - The Line Up

This year's FFF Fest has a little bit for everyone. It all goes down November 8th and 9th at Austin's Waterloo Park. It doesn't pack the "big name" punch the ACL line up does but I feel they are really carving a niche for themselves by offering a much more diverse "indie" festival. You get two jam packed days of music for on $60, which is a great deal . We will be covering the festival and doing out "Spotlights" on all of the artists we think everyone should make time to check out. You can click on the Fun Fun Fest section on the right.
