2011 Austin City Limits Festival Line Up

There has been much speculation on who the headliners were going to be and most of us got a clue this weekend when names started to leak (with the exception of Coldplay) but now we have the full 2011 Austin City Limits Festival line up. Commence the cheering, bitching or whatever other emotions you may be feeling now. Headliners aside we have to say we are pretty stoked about Twin Shadow, Death From Above 1979 and Wild Beasts. Plus love him or hate him Kanye is going to give us SOMETHING to talk about.

ACL Schedule Released, Beastie Boys forced to cancel appearance

IMG_1061 by djatkinson77.

I am sure you have already seen somewhere today the Austin City Limits Festival schedule was released this morning. This is always scary because of the possible conflicts in the schedule. Everyone has different tastes so I am sure some were annoyed in some way this morning but I am happy to say that I have no real conflicts.

The sad news is that the Beastie Boys have been forced to cancel their appearance at the festival due to Adam Yauch being diagnosed with a tumor. Apparently it was caught early and he will have surgery and should be okay. You can get the full info on that from the Beasties [here]. I guess we will have to wait and see if they get a replacement or shift some of the schedule around. We will keep you posted. If you missed the schedule check it out day to day below..

Mile High Music Festival exploded on to the national festival scene last year as hosts to Colorado's largest music and arts festival, offering concertgoers a tremendous variety of musical talent, food from many of Denver's top restaurants, an artists' village and more. The festival, which attracted more than 90,000 attendees its inaugural year, went off without a hitch and promises again to put the fan experience first. The festival grounds, with its remarkable views of the Denver skyline and Rocky Mountain Front Range, will offer even more shade and misting tents, an increased number of free water stations, and shorter concession lines. The 2009 event also boasts an upgraded VIP experience and expanded festival greening initiatives.

This year's Mile High Music Festival introduces a charity component as a special thank you to the community that is helping make the event a Colorado summer tradition. A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit Commerce City's Quality Community Foundation (QCF). "This is extremely good news," said Commerce City Mayor Paul Natale. "The city is very excited to again be apart of the Mile High Music Festival and for AEG Live to donate money to the city's Quality Community Foundation is just music to my ears." The Quality Community Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established by Commerce City in 2006. Fun Fun Fun Fest - Essentials

Fun x 3 Fest boast an impressive group of headliners. Trail of Dead, The National, Dead Milkmen and Bad Brains give you more than enough reasons to make your way down to Waterloo Park. But the line up also boasts an impressive group of up and coming acts that are certainly worth your time. Last year saw early afternoon sets from MGMT and White Denim who then went on to... well you know. So who are some of the essentials for 2008? Here are our suggestions...

Ume - Stage 1 / Sunday 12:25 - 12:55
Ume had been recommended to me by a good friend on several occasions and as I have had them on my list of bands to check out, I now regret I didn’t make it to their one of their shows earlier. First off, let me tell you that Ume is not some low-fi, cutting edge, indie-pop, twee rock band…they are straight up rock in the Sonic Youth, Nirvana, PJ Harvey sense of the word and could fall in line with any of these bands at any given time. - Sonic Itch Music

El Paso Hot Button - Stage 2 / Saturday 2:20 - 2:50
Intimidating news for every aspiring one-man band: Mickey Reece has elevated the title from side-show to art-show under the moniker El Paso Hot Button. El Paso Hot Button is neither from El Paso nor the latest indie dance craze as the name might suggest. El Paso Hot Button is the collective effort of Mickey Reece's four appendages wrought upon guitar and foot-powered percussion.

Yacht - Stage 4 - Saturday / 5:00 - 5:45
Jona Bechtolt is a technological multi talent: his band, YACHT, is an amalgamation of self-taught dance moves and anthemic electro-power jams all played backwards and covered in cherry cola. YACHT shows are uncluttered, inspiring sessions of improbable dancing and synchronized crowd-waving; the songs shudder happily into the air, and any preconceived notions of what makes an energetic performance are shattered by Bechtolt's own strain of shamanistic bombast.

Frightened Rabbit - Stage 1 - Sunday / 2:45 - 3:15
Playing clever but purposefully naïve pop in the manner of the Vaselines, the Twilight Sad, and , Frightened Rabbit sound a good bit bolder than their moniker would suggest, though it suits their lively but nervous musical personality. Frightened Rabbit was founded in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2004, when guitarist Scott Hutchison and his brother , a percussionist who -- like his sibling -- prefers to keep his last name a secret, began recording demos of songs they had written.

Dan Deacon - Stage 4 - Saturday / 7:00 - 8:00
Electronic music composer Dan Deacon is based in Baltimore, MD, and is equally influenced by such diverse elements as Devo, Talking Heads, Scratch Orchestra, Raymond Scott, and Conlon Nancarrow. After several self-released projects, he moved to Baltimore and became an instant figurehead of the fledgling electronic music community. This years Ultimate Reality Tour stop at Emo's will easily be on our top 10 list of best live performances.

Bishop Allen - Stage 1 - Saturday / 3:20 - 3:55
They have the "honor" of being featured on the Nick and Norah soundtrack, are from Brooklyn and We Are Scientists are one of their top 10 friends on MySpace. What more do you need? As Brooklyn pop combo Bishop Allen happily report in their latest e-newsletter, they're almost done with their new disc and follow-up to last year's Bishop Allen & the Broken String. They've tentatively titled the thing Grrr..., and are looking to release it in mid-February on Dead Oceans.

Magnetic Morning - Stage 2 - Saturday / 6:45 - 7:30
Swervedriver's auspicious reunion may have been overshadowed by the return of My Bloody Valentine, but its leader Adam Franklin is nonetheless soldiering on with a new side project called Magnetic Morning. But it was Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino who launched the supergroup, after sifting through potential collaborators and finding only prima donnas.

"It is hard working with people that have the ability to write their own songs because in the end that is what they want to do," Fogarino said. "I would get started with people and then it would fall apart."

That didn't happen with Franklin, who was probably too distracted in 2008 by his underrated band's reunion, as well as his brilliant solo effort Bolts of Melody, to take over the wheel of Magnetic Morning. Instead, the two UK musicians mindmelded and found a middle ground, which sounds very cool indeed.

J*Davey - Stage 4 - Sunday / 3:25 - 4:10
Akin to Seattle in the early ’90s and even Detroit towards the end of that same decade, Los Angeles has erupted with a new caliber of artists and musicians—both native and imported—who create an exciting polyglot of sounds. J*Davey, the punk-funk New Wave duo, embody this new Los Angeles attitude to the fullest. They’re bold, colorful and lots of fun—but also genuine, ambitious and rich with hard-earned street cred.

St. Vincent - Stage 1 - Sunday / 6:30 - 7:30
She has been around for some time but every time I mention how much I am looking forward to seeing her this weekend everyone I tell doesn't seem to know who I am talking about. Get it together people! St. Vincent is the band of Annie Clark. The 25-year-old is an avid tea drinker, used to hair model, and feels uncomfortable when people use the term, "let's pull the trigger on this." "Marry Me," St. Vincent's debut record, is now available on Beggars Banquet.

Last Night: Monolith Music Festival

Set upon the scenic Red Rocks Amphitheater the second annual Monolith Music Festival’s melting pot of acts catered to all in attendance. With beautiful weather (albeit a few showers Saturday night) and scenic views the crowd enjoyed mesmerizing sets from the abundance of different genres that took to the five stages spread out amongst the historic venue. From the soulful sounds of Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, to indie favorites TV On The Radio, to headliners Devotchka and electro darlings Justice, one thing was for certain those who came left satisfied. The second edition of the festival played host to a mostly indie lineup that gave festival goers a chance to witness their favorite bands perform in a venue known for its beauty and tremendous sounding acoustics. With many of performers in awe, the Colorado crowd made sure they felt at home. Aside from the main headliners it was the lesser-known acts that wowed the crowd. Bands such as Port O’Brien, Tilly and The Wall, Foals, and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson gave the crowd something to go add to their iPods. Not to be undone by Red Rocks rookies Vampire Weekend, Cut/Copy, Silversun Pickups, Tokyo Police Club, bands that established themselves from the get go with familiar radio friendly tunes that had the crowd singing and dancing. If you have never made your way out to this venue, add it to your to do list, believe me you will not regret it.

I now present to you Monolith in pictures.

Monolith Music Festival

First I would like to introduce myself as the newest member of the ultra8201 team. My name is B.J., and many of you may have seen a couple posts I have contributed here in the past. I am out in Denver, Colorado and currently have my own blog as well, A Walking Disaster, I also write and do photography for Filter Magazine, in particular their Antics website. I am excited to join the team and will bring a Mile High appeal to my post focusing on the growing music scene here in Denver. In the meantime feel free to send me any welcoming gifts to Richard and Joel.

And now to my first assignment, with the American festival circuit coming to it's last rounds ( i think VooDoo in New Orleans is the last). We have our own little growing festival here in Colorado called The Monolith Music Festival, this is the second year of the fest and is a indie-hipster's wet dream. I am going to post my schedule and hopefully try and stick to it (we know we never get to see all the bands we intent to). The festival takes place at the beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheater, which many consider the best live outdoor venue in the country (sorry...Gorge). The festival actually starts off tonight with a kickoff party at the Bluebird Theater. Here is my Saturday schedule (Sunday is the better of the two so I am still tweaking it a bit). Check for recaps and pics later this weekend.
