SXSW 2009: Filter Magazine's Showdown at Cedar Street

One of the best times during the entire week and basically our home base before we do anything else. Filter Magazine's showdown at Cedar Street has always offered up some of the best up and coming acts all in one place. This year in no exception. They made us sweat it out a little but finally released this years line up! 

The three-day music extravaganza will feature performances from White Lies, Great Northern, N.A.S.A., Wild Light, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Chairlift, Black Gold, Anya Marina, Annuals, a listening event with Bat For Lashes and more.  For those of you who are Austin-bound, make sure to get there early because there will be free BBQ from noon-1pm all three days.

Party Ends announces Space Camp

Our fellow Austinites just announced their SXSW plans. They always have some great parties at Birds Barbershop on South Lamar. This year they are moving the party east to the newest location of Birds. Even better it serves as a grand opening of the new location as well. How fitting.

The line up is ridiculous and I have to give props to them for scoring N.A.S.A. I'm equally excited that Busdriver is also on the bill. It all goes down on Thursday March 19th. Make Note.

N.A.S.A.: The Spirit of Apollo Trailer

If you haven't heard N.A.S.A. yet, you better get onboard. Their debut album, The Spirit Of Apollo drops on February 17th via Anti and features a whole mess of people (David Byrne, Lykke Li, Karen O, Santogold, Kanye West, M.I.A., Spank Rock and many, many more).  All it took was a few DJs by the name of Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon to get all these artists together. Check out the track list here.

There are 5 versions of the cover that will come with every album purchased.  With each disc will be a sleeve for you to display your favorite piece or, if you’d like, you can swap them out with each other as many times as you see fit.

The 5 versions were created by Squeak E. Clean homies and artistic heavyweights Sage Vaughn, Mark Gonzales, Shepard Fairey, Marcel Dzama and The Date Farmers all of whom dug deep and came out with brilliantly different interpretations of the N.A.S.A. concept.

Not only did they contribute a cover, but each artist’s work will also be featured in videos for songs off of The Spirit of Apollo.  The first one being Shepard Fairey’s signature stylings in the video for “Money” featuring David Byrne, Chuck D., Ras Congo, Seu Jorge and Z-Trip.

N.A.S.A.: "Hip Hop" Video (Feat. KRS-One, Slim Kid Tre, & Fat Lip)

Last Saturday, we got to see KRS-One perform at the Mohawk.  Now, we hear him rapping on N.A.S.A.'s new video for the song "Hip Hop", along with Slim Kid Tre and Fatlip.  N.A.S.A.'s debut album, The Spirit of Apollo (check out the track list here) drops on February 17th via Anti.

N.A.S.A.: "Money" Video

N.A.S.A. is an ongoing creative collaboration between two lifelong music aficionados, Squeak E. Clean ad DJ Zegon, and their friends, friends of friends and musical heroes. While N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and contains a number of superstar artists from both coasts of the US, it is about as far from a tension-building geographical showdown as a record can get. Rather, their Anti debut The Spirit of Apollo (due out 2/17) was born with the righteous goal of bringing people together through music and art, and that is exactly what masterminds Sam Spiegel (Squeak E. Clean) and Ze Gonzales (DJ Zegon) have done.

The video for "Money" was directed by Syd Garon and Paul Griswold of Fusion Digital Productions and features David Byrne, Chuck D, Ras Congo, Seu Jorge, and Z-Trip, with artwork from none other than Shepard Fairey.  According to MG Fest, the song and video are both loosely based on the Bible verse, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil", and focuses on the devastation and destruction that can be brought on by unbridled greed and the pursuit of money at all costs. Pretty creative and amazing video if you ask me.

Our friends over at Consequence of Sound say they will be at this year's SXSW.  We are definitely expecting big things from N.A.S.A!  I'm sure we'll be writing more about them in the near future.
