Last Night: Phoenix at La Zona Rosa (Part 2 | w/ Hockey and White Denim)

HOCKEY

WHITE DENIM

Last Night: Phoenix at La Zona Rosa (Part 1 | Soundcheck and Grammy Foundation Q&A)

On Thursday afternoon before the bands extremely SOLD OUT show at La Zona Rosa, Phoenix invited a small group of students for a preview of the show during the bands soundcheck followed by a brief Q&A session afterwards. The group of students were a part of the Grammy Foundation which takes college and high school students and shows them the inner workings of the music industry. A soundcheck being one of those things of course. It was really cool seeing the band working through their songs in such an intimate environment.

Once the band was finished they met up with the students and did the Q&A. When asked about the bands most recent success despite being around for quite a while the band seemed puzzled as to why it happened. They are an extremely humble and great group of guys though. They attributed some of the success to blogs, the initial leak of the album as well as the sharing of "1901" leading up to the release. The students went on to ask a range of questions and here are some of the highlights..

On which Texas bands they were fans of: The band showed admiration for openers White Denim as well as the late At The Drive-In, which the band told a story about seeing in Paris with about 12 other people.

On the Le Blogotheque Sessions we shared last week: They said that the people behind it could be very demanding and that if we could see what they saw that it looked unorganized. But despite that when the final product was done they thought it was amazing. They also mentioned that it was only supposed to be one song but they ended up doing more and they were eventually kicked off the bus.

On festivals: They touched on how much they enjoyed playing ACL and seeing the other bands and shared that they would be playing at this years Coachella Music Festival. They also joked that they had played it once before and sounded terrible.

Phoenix performs "Lisztomania" on Jimmy Fallon

Having seen Phoenix at ACL in 2006, I can definitely tell you there will be a bunch more people when they play at this year's festival. I also love how you can really tell Jimmy Fallon is a genuine fan of the band when he introduces them and then seeing how excited he is after the performance.

Monolith Fest Recap: Phoenix

Upon waking up on Sunday we were bummed to learn MSTRKRFT had canceled their appearance at Monolith, which forced Phoenix to perform on the Main Stage at Red Rocks. The band did not disappoint and played to one of the largest crowds of the weekend. We were lucky enough to capture the set opener ("Lisztomania") on video from about as close as you can get without being on the stage.

New Phoenix Video :: "1901"

In less than two weeks time, I'll finally be listening to the new Phoenix album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Update: It's actually available now via iTunes). It gives me plenty of time to study up until their ACL performance in October. In the mean time, enjoy the video for their single, "1901".

Dazed Digital recently caught up with Phoenix's Christian Mazzalai and Deck D’Arcy. Also catch Phoenix on the road, as they tour North America.

Phoenix Announces 2009 North American Tour Dates, New Video for "Lisztomania"

Phoenix the Band

I can safely say I've been a fan of Phoenix since their beginnings towards the end of 2000 with their first release, United. Seems like they're everywhere nowadays (about time!), on blogs everywhere and even a performance on SNL a few weeks back. The foursome from France drop their new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix next month on May 26th and it's already gaining serious buzz since it's leak last month. If you haven't heard the first single "1901", go to their website to download it for FREE.

I was lucky enough to see Phoenix in 2006 at ACL, although I had to miss out on seeing another one of my favorite bands, Ghostland Observatory. Looking back, I made the right choice because Phoenix chose to skip Austin on this round of tour dates. Maybe they'll be at this year's ACL? If so I'd love to see them again.

Update: They're playing ACL!!!

Check out Phoenix's North American tour dates down below and the new video for "Lisztomania".
