Last Night: Radiohead at Austin City Limits

I have spent the last 10 years of my life dedicated to my love of music and in that time I have seen some amazing shows. Thousands of them. But nothing will ever compare to last nights Radiohead performance at Austin City Limits. You could feel the energy going into the building and it was like no other taping I have experienced before. I can honestly say that the venue was filled with die hard fans comparing stories about how many times they had seen them before and how amazing it was to be there. It's also pretty intense when Robert Plant is in attendance.

When ACL producer Terry Lickona made it to the stage he mentioned how historic the taping was and how they had tried for years to book the band which was impressive given that he has been with the show since it's inception and they have hosted countless music legends over 38 seasons on the air. Needless to say when the band took the stage there were several tears in the crowd.

Opening up with "Bloom" and "Little By Little" from King of Limbs I think it was settled that they would be relying on material from the later albums. I knew this going into the taping as most artist that tape the show are usually "pushing" the new stuff and seeing them perform the songs live for the first time gave me a new appreciation for the latest album.

Of course this is Radiohead and just when you thing think you have them pegged they surprise you with something unexpected. After moving through tracks like Myxomatosis and The Gloaming they started off with "The Amazing Sounds of Orgy", a B-Side off the Pyramid Song UK 12" and Japanese versions of the release which Yorke commented was written when he "was obsessed with the banking system". He went on to mention that it disappeared "like a wet fart in the wind" but was now back. Pretty fitting.

From there they went on to perform a new B Side "Staircase" before moving on to material off In Rainbows with back to back performances of Reckoner and Arpeggi and then jumping back to a new song "Identikit". After that came "Lotus Flower" and I am sure everyone that has seen the video for the track was curious to see if he would dance and was pleasantly surprised when he did. After that came an unexpected surprise with "There, There" which I think was the highlight of an otherwise dreary album (Hail to the Thief) and the band closing off with the only track of the night off Kid A, "Idoiteque" which has grown even more impressive over time paired with the bands growth and direction.

The band received a very well deserved standing ovation and returned to the stage to thunderous applause. The crowd was in an obvious frenzy and Yorke said he would calm them down with the next  track because it was a mellow one and went into a new track "Skirting on the Surface" which even though an unfamiliar track to the crowd, could not have come at a more fitting time. As the band finished up someone yelled out CREEP! which got a laugh from both the crowd and the band who said that "wouldn't be happening" and that it was written a long time ago "when they were young and stupid" before breaking into the highlight of the night, "Paranoid Android", which is the best track off what is arguably one of the best albums of all time Ok Computer. The performance of that song won't make it on the show but it's something I won't soon forget.

Austin City Limits Announces 2012 Tapings (Radiohead, The Shins + More)

As the year winds down, the always nice and incredibly awesome people at Austin City Limits have to decided to bring some holiday cheer by announcing their 2012 tapings. They have indeed made us wish 2012 was here already. Confirmed for Season 38 include RADIOHEAD (!!!!), The Shins, The Civil Wars, and Rodrigo y Gabriela w/ C.U.B.A.

When it was announced Radiohead was coming to Austin, our first thought was we have to get tickets (no matter the cost). It's not everyday your favorite band comes to town. And our second thought was, we hoped they'd be recording a taping on the famed Austin City Limits stage. Check, check.... (via)

As always, to register for a chance to win tickets, read the official ACL blog (how we found out by the way), stalk them on Facebook, join their mailing list, and become their Twitter friend. If you're not already, what are you waiting for?

Radiohead | Live From Los Angeles (Haiti Benefit Concert) [FREE Download]

At the beginning of the year, Radiohead performed a benefit concert in Los Angeles to help raise money for the people of Haiti after a devastating earthquake. With only 1,400 people in attendance, this was definitely an intimate once in a lifetime chance to see the band. Too bad like pretty much everyone who reads this blog, none of us got a chance to attend this show. But we have some good news for you if you love Radiohead as much as we do.

The good people over at Inez4bears shot the two hour concert with webcams and made it available for FREE download. It seems like a lot of work went into this, so all they ask is that you donate to Oxfam, whose proceeds will benefit Haiti.

If you don't have the time or energy to spend downloading, they've also loaded it on Youtube (watch the entire twenty-four song concert below).

Radiohead Performing "These Are My Twisted Words" (Live @ The Frequency Festival)

This weekend marked the first time Radiohead performed in Austria and the fans at this year's Frequency Festival sure got a special surprise. New Radiohead :: "These Are My Twisted Words"

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/357894/Thom+Yorke.jpg
A few weeks ago, we posted a new Radiohead song they recorded to honor the life of recently deceased WWI veteran Harry Patch. The song "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)" was offered as a download (£ 1.00) through the band's WASTE site.

Last night our friends from Consequence of Sound unearthed information about an unreleased track while digging around on the unofficial Radiohead fan site At Ease's message board. The information proved to be incredibly vague, giving no link or explanation to the whereabouts of the song. The curious bloggers searched across the web and came up with a mysterious mp3 leak of the new song "These Are My Twisted Words". No word on if the leak was the band's doing but as of right now, we're sure glad to have more new Radiohead!

New Radiohead :: "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)"

http://blog.kexp.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/Thom%20Yorke-Troy.jpg
Today Radiohead released a new song honoring the life of WWI veteran Harry Patch, who recently died last month. The man was a firm believer in peace, who spoke out against war until he died at 111 years old. The band was inspired to record a song after him after hearing an interview with him a few years back on the Today program on Radio4. The song was recorded a few weeks before his death. Stream the song down below or purchase it for £ 1.00, with proceeds to benefit the British legion. [Via Dead Air Space]

New Thom Yorke (Solo) Video :: "The Present Tense" (Live)

This past weekend, Thom Yorke performed a special solo show at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk. During the set, he debuted a new song, entitled "The Present Tense". Although we're not sure yet if this will part of a new Radiohead disc or another solo album, we do have a video proof of the new song. Such an amazing up close video! (via)

'Radiohead: Interviews 1991-2000'

For those of you that can't get enough of Radiohead, we totally understand, neither can we.  According to Ateaseweb.com (a Radiohead fan site we like), a new Radiohead book is on its way.  'Radiohead:  Interviews 1991-2000' is a selection of Radiohead interviews, compiled by John Luerssen.

The books description reads:
Collecting all of the essential interviews from Radiohead's first decade, 'Radiohead:  Interviews 1991-2000' allows the world's reigning experimental band to tell its own story.  From "Creep" blasting alt-rock upstarts to music's reigning artistic force, the group's steady climb to world domination is chronicled in these pages.
The book won't be available in stores until March via Rock Reader Books.  If you must have it now, you can download all 215 pages as a PDF for $6.95 or order it online through lulu.com for $22.51.  You can even preview the first ten pages for free here.
