New St. Vincent | "Surgeon" [Stream]

Annie Clark of St. Vincent
Certain people just do a great job of promoting themselves and St. Vincent is no different. Instead of just releasing a new song from her upcoming album Strange Mercy (due out 9/13), she had the idea of unlocking video teasers (four in total), one at a time. As more and more people tweeted about #strangemercy, the videos would culminate into being able to hear the first single. Seriously a great idea!

New St. Vincent Video | "Marrow"

Today St. Vincent released a video for "Marrow" (directed by Terri Timely, who also did her "Actor Our of Work" video), probably our favorite track on her truly great sophomore album Actor. (via)

St. Vincent Performs "Marrow" on Jimmy Kimmel

Last night the lovely St. Vincent performed "Marrow" on Jimmy Kimmel. It's one of our favorite songs off her amazing sophomore album Actor. The disc will certainly be on our "best of" list at the end of the year, so if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.

Last Night: St. Vincent's Austin Weekend

St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.

After weeks of touring and stops at various festivals around the country Annie Clark aka St. Vincent stopped in Austin for what seemed like a victory lap. Over the course of two days she made stops at Waterloo Records for an in store, had a triumphant show at The Mohawk and finished it all off with a beautiful set for the Austin City Limits program. We were lucky enough to make 2 out of the 3 performances (sorry Waterloo) and were able to get some amazing shots. We also tried a new thing letting our Twitter followers choose which songs they wanted us to record. Both "Marrow" and "Now, Now" had the highest votes so we went ahead and shot them both. Also check out Austin Bloggy Limits and Austin Kleon for more recaps from this weekend.

St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.St.Vincent by you.

The line outside of the Mohawk was insane leading up to show time but we managed to get in just in the nick of time. Clark came out and you could see that she was both pleased and surprised with the adoration. She played what I think was a near perfect set in pretty much the order I would choose if given the opportunity. Given that it was the last show of the tour during the encore they invited Pattern Is Movement out and toasted the crowd (and themselves) with a bottle of champagne. So fitting.

St. Vincent Set List - The Mohawk 6.19.09
"Marry Me"
"The Strangers"
"Save Me From What I Want"
"Now, Now"

St. Vincent Program by you.

Seeing that the set at The Mohawk was so amazing the night before I knew that I could expect close to perfection for the Austin City Limits taping. Maybe setting the standards a little high? Yes, but I have to admit it came pretty close. I have to take a second to say that the staff for the tapings are the most amazing people. Everyone that is involved is extremely friendly and helpful from beginning to end. Thanks for that! But back to the show. The taping began promptly and was amazing throughout. She played a set that focused heavily on her latest album Actor and included a fantastic cover of the Beatles song "Dig A Pony". She apparently wasn't happy with her first take of Marry Me so came out after the initial encore for a second shot. No complaints for the crowd. I also picked up this limited poster for the show(below). It was designed by Farley Bookout and the inspiration for the artwork was drawn for her love of war propaganda illustration and Victorian history. Very fitting.

St. Vincent Records a Couple of Videos in a Church

St. Vincent sure is a busy woman these days. She just wrapped up her tour with a trio of shows in Austin this past weekend, which consisted of an afternoon show at Waterloo Records, an evening show at the Mohawk, and a Saturday night taping at the famed ACL TV Studios. We'll be posting our pics/video from her Mohawk show and a review of her ACL Taping later today or tomorrow.

Here's a couple of videos she recently recorded in a church for a Pitchfork TV Special, entitled Cemetery Gates. The first one is for the song "Actor Out of Work", the second is for "The Party". Both are off St. Vincent's incredible sophomore album Actor, which you should probably already own. If not, purchase it here.

Also, don't forget to tune in to Letterman this Wednesday to watch Annie and her amazingly talented band performing on the Sullivan Theater stage. Wonder what song she'll be playing...

Update: She'll be playing quite possibly my favorite song from the new album, "Marrow" on Letterman.

New St. Vincent :: "The Strangers"

In addition to touring all over the world, St. Vincent has been hard at work on the follow-up to her debut, Marry Me. Her sophomore album Actor due out May 5th can be pre-ordered here. The first single, "The Strangers" sounds brilliant. It starts sweetly and then she rocks it out. I love it, but don't take my word, listen for yourself.

Sydney Festival 2009 (Feat. Videos of St. Vincent)

St Vincent: Marry Me (Via Shoot The Player)

St Vincent: What Me Worry? (Via Shoot The Player)

St. Vincent took part in Sydney Festival's "Play Me, I'm Yours" public piano project in addition to playing three sold-out performances at The Famous Spiegeltent.  For more info on the project, click here.

A little background on Sydney Festival:
Sydney Festival was originally conceived by the Sydney Committee, the NSW State Government and the City of Sydney with a view to attracting people into the city centre during the holiday month of January.

The first Festival took place in 1977 and it has since grown to become one of Australia's largest annual cultural celebrations with an international reputation for modern, popular and intelligent programming. In many ways it is probably still best understood as a celebration of Sydney and its style and energy reflect the confidence, diversity and vigour of one of the world's most beautiful cities.

For three weeks each January the Festival offers a rich program of around 80 events involving upwards of 500 artists from Australia and abroad covering dance, theatre, music, visual arts, cross media and forums. In any given year, it makes use of most of the main theatres across the city including Sydney Theatre, CarriageWorks, City Recital Hall and venues at the Sydney Opera House.

Sydney Festival also presents a number of quality, free outdoor events such as the long-running Festival in the Domain with Jazz and Symphony concerts, each attracting up to 100,000 people. In 2008 the Festival introduced a new opening event, Festival First Night, for which people are invited to take to the streets to enjoy a large-scale celebration of music and performance. In its inaugural year, Festival First Night attracted 200,000 people into the heart of the city.

The Sydney Festival usually attracts a total audience of approximately 1 million people across all of its events each year, making it the most attended cultural event in Australia. [Via Sydney Festival]

In addition to St. Vincent, other artists who played this year's Sydney Festival include Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Z-Trip, Bill Callahan., and even A-Trak and Santogold.

Today and tomorrow, Bon Iver is playing a couple of shows (here and here).  Juana Molina also has scheduled sets on January 30, 31 and February 1.

Sydney Festival also has a flickr account to check out all the pictures and even a blog, which you can check out here.

Black Cab Sessions

Such a simple yet brilliant idea. Take musicians around in a taxi cab around the streets of London. The band performs in the backseat and the recording equipment is kept to a minimum and filmed with the perfect backdrop. Daniel Johnston, Cold War Kids , Lightspeed Champion and Death Cab For Cutie are just some of the artists that have already participated. My favorite part is that the good people putting this together only have people on that they are fans of and have even turned down labels trying to get their artist on. Please check out this site. Awesome!
